2/9/2026- My Bloody Valentine (1981) and Valentine (2001)

Monday, February 9, 2026

This Monday, February 9th- seeking something festive to pre-game this Valentine’s Day? Look no further than the Sacrilegious Cinema: Menagerie of Madness double feature at Hot Wax to give you an extra dose of holiday horror- whether you harbor a deep-seated hatred for all things gushy or you’re an avid fan of V-Day and want to snuggle up to your lover, this movie night will satiate both parties’ Lupercalian lust serving up the most notorious picks of the star-struck festivities. ❤️‍🔥💋🍫

Starting off at 8PM, we take a pit stop in Valentine Bluffs (the little town with a big heart), where residents are warned to cease all holiday celebrations, otherwise face the wrath of legendary miner turned murderer, Harry Warden. As the authenticity of his existence is questioned as fact or folklore, people begin to drop dead amidst the festivities, accompanied by a fatal love triangle in MY BLOODY VALENTINE (1981).
Wanting to capitalize on the 80’s slasher boom, Valentine’s Day was untouched in the holiday horror territory, and thus director George Mihalka exploits the symbols of the season, leaning heavily into the irony, as opposed to serving as simply a romantic horror in this Canadian blood-soaked gem. ⛏️💝🫀💒

Then, at 10PM, we take a trip to San Francisco where a group of friends begin receiving ominous Valentine’s Day cards signed by Jeremy Melton- a boy they rejected years earlier and the victim of relentless bullying. Now, a killer clad Cupid hunts the girls down one by one as the holiday approaches in this vengeful VALENTINE (2001) slasher.
Loosely based on Tom Savage’s 1996 novel by the same name, director of cult classic flick Urban Legend (1998) Jamie Blanks offers an alternative to the long withstanding predecessor, reinvigorating the beloved 80’s holiday horror with a Y2K makeover. The design of the perpetrator proves effectively uncanny, donning the apt Cupid mask, fashioned from canvas and inspired by the visages of renowned Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli’s cherub paintings. Starring Wild Thing’s Denise Richards and David Boreanaz of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame, there’s plenty of eye candy for everyone to go around. 💘🌹💌🏹👼🏼

Will you be my bloody Valentine? 🩸🥀
